a white board with a red painted sunburst, or compass design on it and small peg holes all around it in a circular pattern. A large wooden hourglass hangs on the wall next to it.

The traverse board, which resembles a compass, is one tool sometimes illiterate 16th Century sailors use to plot the time, speed and direction of their course. Each four hours, the results are recorded on a chart.
